MacTel treatment receives permanent J-code to improve access for patients
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has assigned a permanent J-Code to revakinagene taroretcel-lwey (ENCELTO). As the award of this J-code (J3430) on October 1, 2025, this medication is the only approved treatment for Macular Telangiectasia Type 2 (MacTel), which causes progressive vision loss in those patients diagnosed with the condition.
The evolution of eye care on display at AAO 2025
The 2025 annual scientific meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) is taking place in Orlando, Florida from October 17 through 20, 2025. On the second day of presentations during this meeting, the AAO highlighted areas of research through issued press releases. The theme of these releases pointed to the evolution of eyecare through technology and innovation.
I have spent time writing for businesses in the travel, technology, education, and healthcare industries. With each chapter of my career, I have found ways to tell the stories of these brands and capture the attention.

Justis P. Ehlers, MD, on the HELIOS trial for NPDR
Ehlers shared data from the HELIOS phase 1 trial investigating a novel treatment for non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) without center-involving diabetic macular edema. The study compared a sham group with a group treated with a single injection of OTX-TKI (axitinib), a tyrosine kinase inhibitor with a sustained release platform potentially allowing dosing every 6 to 12 months.

In this video interview, Katherine Talcott, MD, a retina specialist at the Cleveland Clinic’s Cole Eye Institute, explores the evolving landscape of retinal surgery, focusing on emerging imaging technologies. She begins by distinguishing 2 main categories of technological advancements: intraoperative optical coherence tomography (OCT) and heads-up display systems.
